Road Safety Cayman

  1. Remember that drinking and driving is never worth the risk, even on cycles and scooters. Alcohol impairs your judgment and coordination, making the road a dangerous place for you and others. Choose safety over indulgence by always finding a sober alternative to get home.

  2. Remain extra vigilant and attentive to pedestrians, day and night.  Do this by reducing speed, avoiding distractions and your phone and using headlights at night. Always yield the right-of-way and exercise caution at crosswalks.

  3. It’s the Holiday Party time of the year.  Prioritize safety by designating a sober driver or arranging alternative transportation if you plan to consume alcohol. Let's celebrate responsibly and ensure a joyful and accident-free journey for everyone on the road.

  4. Always use your indicators to signal an intended change of direction, whether turning left or right, or when moving out of your traffic lane. Using indicators is the universal language for drivers to notify other road users of their intentions. Failing to indicate is a traffic offense.

  5. Cayman Islands Traffic Law states that any child travelling in a vehicle must wear a seatbelt and if under 14 years must sit in the rear of the vehicle. Car seats and boosters will provide additional protection for infants . Keep our children safe and secure in vehicles.

  6. It is an offence to operate a vehicle while holding your cell phone. Even when stationery in traffic flow or at stop signs and traffic lights you are breaking the law unless reporting an emergency to 911 and unable to pull over.  Always use a hands-free option or safely pull over.

  7. Road safety is a shared responsibility. Pedestrians should use sidewalks where provided or walk on the left facing the flow of traffic. Use pedestrian crossings where possible where you have right of way to safely cross. Drivers and riders should give way to pedestrians waiting to cross and MUST give way to pedestrians on a crossing. Pedestrians should wait until it is safe before stepping out.

  8. Some things get better with age but tyres do not! It is dangerous to drive with worn out tyres Check the tread regularly and don’t be afraid to say goodbye when it’s time!

  9. Wet driving conditions require extra care . Put on headlights to see and be seen ,  brake and steer gently to avoid skidding , keep your distance and slow down . Be mindful of pedestrians and cyclists .

  10. People not wearing wear seat belts are 30 times more likely to be ejected from a vehicle during a crash. Wearing a seat belts reduces the risk of death or  injury.  Buckle up!
