Funky Tangs Limited was founded by brothers, Errol & Kenneth Watler, in the Cayman Islands in 1970. The idea behind Funky Tang’s was to supply all the latest music for music lovers throughout the Cayman Islands.
Created from humble beginnings in rented premises located in the capital of George Town on Shedden Road with a store area of approximately 150 sq. ft. The company started with one full time employee along with the brothers assisting after hours, during holidays and on weekends, because in those days to make ends meet they had to work a full time job with the Power & Light Company, known today as CUC.
Funky Tang’s became the #1 Music Store in the Cayman Islands from its inception. When the company started its operations in 1970, some 45 singles, 33 1/3 RPM Phonograph records, or LP as it was then called, and 4 tract cassette tapes was the way music was produced. Getting the latest hits first and service with a smile has been and continues to be Funky Tang’s ticket to success. The company has been phenomenally successful and now owns and occupies its own building which is approximately 3000 sq ft, with ample parking in the rear of the building, and now employs a work force of 9 full time and three 3 part time employees. During Christmas an additional 6 to 10 employees are added.
Funky Tang’s is conveniently located approximately one mile from Owen Roberts’s International Airport and about two blocks from the centre of George Town. In November 2009, Funky Tang’s took the bold step, despite the economic downturn, in opening up their first branch store. The store is located in the Savannah Plaza, just across the road from Countryside Shopping Village in Savannah. The expansion has been met with enthusiasm from our many valued customers and the store has taken off as it serves this expanding area.
Over the years Funky Tangs have expanded its merchandise line to include a wide selection of electronic equipment, home & auto, musical instruments, video games & systems, satellite television, fireworks, home appliances, mobile phones, computers, and it continues to offer the largest selection of music on the island -from all the latest hits available on the international market.
